GENIE Course Delivery System
It is anticipated that most Geomatics Engineering courses will have a significant online
component, and some will be offered entirely online. Delivery of highly technical courses
with large data content, typical of some of the courses, is problematic with traditional methods
of distance learning. Consequently, a new, unique delivery system called Geomatics Engineering
Net Instructional Environment (GENIE) will be developed and utilized extensively
for program delivery.
The GENIE system will allow FAU to deliver Geomatics Engineering courses to students' desktops
from Port St. Lucie to Miami, and eventually beyond via the Internet, greatly lessening the need
for students to come to campus. GENIE will impact two major aspects of course presentation -
content delivery (lecture) and homework, project work, and laboratory assignments. Students
will be able to participate in an online course delivery system (such as Eluminate Live) that
features synchronous audio and video interactions between students and the instructor.
Another major advantage of GENIE is that it will enable students to remotely access and run
professional grade software, such as Geographic Information Systems software, without having the
software loaded onto their personal computers. The student's computer acts essentially as a "dumb"
terminal - all the data interface and software program execution takes place on the GENIE servers,
which can accommodate up to 30 students simultaneously.
The GENIE system has significant benefits regarding convenience for students by greatly
reducing student travel and time away from work or other activities.
